Across the huge roster of ubers in Battle Cats, many of these ubers can be used in different methods and have their own play styles. With that, certain ubers tailor to play styles that require more or less effort than others. The difficulty of using certain ubers is a common factor that dictates many people’s personal placements.

Firstly, skill is a complicated factor to describe. Battle Cats is a game with limited amounts of control, as for the most part you can’t control units since your only true input on the field is the timing of when you spawn a cat, and thereon you can only watch them act according to their nature. Battle Cats is certainly more dynamic than that, and here are a few components of what I consider “skill” in Battle Cats.

Obviously the easiest aspect to understand. The timing of when you spawn a unit can massively dictate its success. Certain units (particularly ranged attackers) do not have to be timed strictly, but certain melee and kamikaze units practically demand good timing in order to maximize their lifetime and get as much value as possible. Timing also encompasses other factors such as the utilization of Cat Cannon and even Summoner units if present on the field.

A major aspect to using a unit “correctly” is to use them alongside units that work well together. This mostly encompasses the factor of lineup building, but that in itself is another skill that can determine the outcome of whether an uber will perform well or poorly in a stage. A good example is a unit like Gaia, who massively benefits from strategies like Research Rock where keeping enemies in place is mandatory for her play style. Tailoring to the proper synergy in order to make a unit perform its best is both a factor of knowledge and implementation.

Most units/ ubers in Battle Cats have either short-term or long-term sustainability. With the former (which usually includes melee and kamikaze) being able to hold your ground and sustain the frontline or at least create good spacing is key to allowing these ubers to perform their best, as you may have to go in for multiple infiltrations for victory. Knowing how to survive when a shortage of offense is on the frontline is a skill that must be mastered when using particularly unsustainable attackers such as Lasvoss or Izanagi.

This plays closely to the previous point. Certain units/ ubers are either considerably more expensive than others flat out or carry a significant cost to cooldown ratio that leads to a long-term unsustainable cash drainage. Knowing how often you should spawn a unit, when to spawn a unit, and at what quantity are factors that must be assessed right in the middle of the battle for the highest chance of victory. Cost/ cooldown variables also allow certain ubers to gain value far more easily than other ubers. An uber like Balrog is virtually unpunishable because of his generous cost to cooldown ratio, whereas a unit like Dioramos can be catastrophic to lose early due to his insane cost and poor cooldown.

Certain ubers are more reliant on RNG mechanics than others. This leads to a process of trial and error, where uber performance can fluctuate based on the factor of luck. While I’m not here to claim that “luck is a skill,” the presence of RNG factors in an uber means there is a higher likelihood of the player resetting runs or making optimal setups in order to maximize their chances of success. In this case, the amount of RNG leads to more effort being put into making the uber perform at its best.
